Ethena Pay Adds Earn+ Through Aave V4 Lending on Avalanche

TL;DR: Ethena Pay’s Earn+ routes deposits into an Upshift vault curated by Steakhouse and using Aave V4 on Avalanche. The layered structure matters when assessing rewards and withdrawals.

Ethena Pay has added an optional rewards product that connects a consumer-facing dollar balance to an onchain lending strategy. Aave Labs described the Earn+ integration on October 28, identifying separate providers for the app, vault infrastructure, strategy and lending markets.

That division of responsibilities is the most useful starting point for understanding the product. A familiar interface can simplify access without removing the risks and dependencies underneath it.

    Several firms perform different functions

According to Aave’s integration announcement, Earn+ deposits enter an Upshift vault curated by Steakhouse, with the strategy using Aave V4 on Avalanche. Aave explicitly says it does not operate, curate or manage the vault.

The announcement describes a strategy that supplies USDe and borrows USDT. It says users choose how much of their balance to allocate, with withdrawals processed within 24 hours under the stated product terms.

The product is therefore not simply an ordinary dollar balance earning interest directly from Aave. It is a third-party strategy using several components, each of which has a defined role.

Borrowing costs are part of the rewards calculation

A strategy that borrows one asset against another has to account for both sides of the position. The return on supplied or deployed assets matters, but so do the cost of borrowing, applicable fees and any losses incurred while changing the position.

If borrowing becomes more expensive, the margin available to support rewards can narrow even without a dramatic move in the collateral’s quoted price. The direction and size of that effect depend on the strategy’s actual composition.

An advertised rewards rate should therefore be read alongside its assumptions and the terms governing changes. A historical or current rate is not the same thing as a fixed contractual return for an indefinite period.

The lending network and the app have separate liquidity needs

Aave’s protocol changelog records the Avalanche deployment of V4 in July, including its Hub and Spoke structure. The integration uses that lending infrastructure as one component of a wider customer product.

Liquidity can be constrained at different points. The strategy may need to unwind borrowing or retrieve assets, while the app must turn the result into a balance the customer can use. An absence of a contractual lock-up does not make every underlying step instantaneous.

That is why a stated processing window is useful information. It describes the intended service experience while leaving the underlying execution and product conditions relevant to the outcome.

The meaningful comparison is net rewards against the full risk

For a user, the decision is not settled by whether the interface labels the product as savings, rewards or yield. The economic question is what risks are taken to earn the additional return, and whether the customer understands those risks.

Relevant factors include collateral valuation, liquidation parameters, smart-contract behavior, strategy discretion and the terms of the assets being used. The parties’ separate responsibilities also affect who can respond if a particular layer encounters a problem.

There is an operational benefit in packaging those services into a simpler workflow. It can reduce the number of transactions and dashboards a customer needs to manage. The corresponding responsibility is to explain the investment exposure as clearly as the interface explains the deposit action.

Earn+ is another example of lending infrastructure being embedded inside an application with a broader financial role. Its success should be judged through dependable operation and understandable net outcomes, rather than treating the presence of a well-known protocol as a guarantee for the entire product.
